Wellbutrin and Memory Loss
What is Wellbutrin®?
Wellbutrin, or bupropion hydrochloride, is a popular antidepressant drug. It works by inhibiting norepinephrine and dopamine uptake. Unlike other antidepressants, it doesn’t affect monoamine oxidase (MAOIs) or serotonin (SSRIs). It’s generally prescribed to treat major depressive disorders or seasonal depressive disorders. Bupropion hydrochloride is also marketed as Zyban®, a smoking cessation aid. These drugs should not be taken at the same time, nor should they be taken by people suffering from any type of seizure disorder.
The link between Wellbutrin and memory loss
In most cases, Wellbutrin is tolerated well by those who take it. It has the advantage of being less likely to cause weight gain or sexual side effects, both of which are more common with other antidepressants. Common side effects of Wellbutrin include headaches, dry mouth, and nausea.
Memory loss is listed as a low incidence side effect of Wellbutrin, occurring in one to five percent of patients. Because Wellbutrin is used to treat serious depression, memory loss is considered an acceptable risk compared to the original symptoms being treated. If memory loss becomes severe or troublesome, consult your doctor to see if you should change your dosage or try a different medication.
Never change your dosages of antidepressants or stop taking them without your doctor’s guidance. Antidepressants can cause major withdrawal symptoms, and all changes in frequency or amount taken should be closely monitored by a doctor.
Solutions to memory loss from Wellbutrin
There are several ways to increase memory and general brain function if you’re suffering from memory loss due to Wellbutrin. Several authors have written books about programs to use to increase your short term memory. In addition, brain games have become popular recently, with video games and online sites popping up full of exercises designed to improve your brain power. Any of these, if practiced regularly, can have a strong positive effect on your memory.
Another way to address memory loss is with nutritional supplements like Constant Focus. Be sure to check with your doctor before using Constant Focus or any other supplement to avoid interactions with your current medication.
Constant Focus is formulated to provide compounds that help increase circulation to the brain and reduce stress, which is a common cause of memory loss and inability to focus or concentrate. Other ingredients in Constant Focus help prevent the breakdown of important neurotransmitters. With Constant Focus, you can regain your normal brain power, decrease memory loss, and bring your brain into optimum condition.
