Food for Thought – or Memory
What is Brain Food?
A good diet with the right combination of vitamins and minerals can improve the functioning of all of the body’s systems, including memory. The term “brain food” is thrown around a lot in conversation, and may leave people wondering what these brain power foods may be. Brain food is food that contains nutrients that help develop the brain, maximize brain power, improve brain functioning, and provide natural energy so that your body and mind perform at their best.
How Brain Food Works
Brain food works in different ways depending on the type of food it is. Healthy fats help to build your brain and give it energy, foods high in antioxidants help to protect the cells in your brain from mutation or death, and tyrosine proteins help boost the efficiency of the neurotransmitters in your brain.
Brain Power Foods
Some brain power foods include wild salmon, acai berries, blueberries, cacao beans, coffee beans, and matcha green tea leaves. Any foods that provide you with a well rounded diet full of an appropriate and healthy amount of fats, fiber, carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables will also help contribute to good brain function, but these foods listed have been found to be good brain power foods.
Brain Support Supplements
Brain support supplements can also be used in place of some of these foods. These supplements contain many of the essential brain nutrients that the brain power foods contain, and are an easy replacement to brain food as they require no preparation or an attempt to hunt down some of these more rare foods. Taking these supplements regularly with a doctor’s supervision can help your brain get the nutrition it needs. Some common supplements to help improve brain function include Ginkgo Biloba, Vinpocetine, and Huperzia Serrata.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo Biloba is widely used in eastern medicine to ward off memory loss, prevent Alzheimer’s, and reverse signs of memory loss. Ginkgo Biloba is full of flavonoids and terpenoids that help increase blood flow to the brain, reduce inflammation, prevent cell damage, increase neurotransmitter ability, and increase alertness.
Vinpocetine
Vinpocetine helps increase blood flow and protect brain cells from damage and is also widely used to prevent memory problems and enhance brain functioning.
Huperzia Serrata
Finally, Huperzia Serrata is derived from Chinese club moss and is currently thought to be as effective or maybe even more effective in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease as many of the common prescription medications on the market. All of these supplements can be taken to drastically improve brain functioning and prevent memory loss.
Look for a good quality brain support supplement containing all these ingredients, like Constant Focus.
